I don't know how many of you folks out there are science fiction or fantasy fans. If you're not I think it's your loss. Despite what your bitchy old maid English teacher told you in Jr. High School, it's just as legitimate a literature as any other and asks the big questions about the "human condition" just as well as any other, sometimes better. After all, what's more important than the future and the genre provides an excellent opportunity for "if this goes on" kinds of stories.

Naturally, the message people draw from these stories depend a lot on what they bring to the story with them. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is a classic example. It is excellently written with a depth and attention to detail one seldom sees. Virtually everyone who reads the books insists on seeing them as allegorical, i.e. one extended metaphor from cover to cover. I've met people who see an object lesson on abandoning traditional values, others who see the Second World War acted out in a commentary on fascism, still other see an environmental angle with the Ents. Lots of us have met hippy folk in the 60s and 70s quite convinced the stories foretold the peace, love, and dope generation. So much so that they insist the Hobbits pipeweed is marijuana. The point being that despite the author's intention a reader may take a totally different message home than the author intended. And no, that admission doesn't legitimize that stupid deconstructionist crap.

So it is with the movie Chronicles of Riddick starring Vin Diesel, a sorta, kinda sequel to Pitch Black. I enjoyed the movie greatly. I thought it was great story, although many might find it too dark in tone. This wasn't a problem for me since I like my entertainment a little on the dark side. I'm one of those people that find people who are always chipper and happy intolerable. Morning people are particularly irritating. If you see me chipper and happy go-lucky, it's probably raining. But I digress.

I'm not going to go all through the movie, so for the 3 or 4 of you who haven't seen it, grab the DVD. I'm going to concern myself with the heavies in the movie, the Necromongers. I found these blood-thirsty closed-minded homicide machines to be a perfect metaphor for our present day Muslims. Ironically, one of the first people they waste in the film is a Muslim Imam. I know, I know. Muslims in the future? It doesn't compute, but no movie is perfect.

The Necromonger's religious beliefs are beyond bizarre, they are demonstrably insane. In order to achieve their paradise, the UnderVerse, they are dedicated to setting things right. Unfortunately for everybody that isn't one of them, the Necromongers consider life itself to be a cosmic mistake, a tragic accident, a cosmic infestation if you will. They are literally a death cult. They practice what they preach by sterilizing themselves when they become Necromongers to prevent themselves from adding to the problem. Consequently, they increase only by conversion, which is easier than it sounds since the only other choice is to be murdered. Sound familiar? This is their only function. They travel from place to place, planet to planet, and destroy everything the find. Those that will convert are converted into killing machines themselves. Everyone that won't is killed. Then the process is repeated somewhere else. They are relentless and are too far gone to be reasoned with. They know that their cause is righteous and the only way; they will brook no disagreement. That should also sound familiar.

I take exception! I am a Debate/Language Arts teacher, and I love Sci/Fi. Actually, I do realize that some of my collegues don't consider it as legitimate as Emily Dickens, much to the loss of their students and themselves.
I guess we INTP types are the ones who can appreciate sci/fi.

Okay, okay; I'll try and not complain so much the next time my husband watches it. And with satellite, it's on at least once every other week. Geez I hate Vin Diesel.

actually muslims does not try to convert and they do not try to kill those who wont. im not a muslim but i know that when muslim armies conqured a country they did not try to impose a religion up the people, the people could choose for them self. christianity on the other hand, forced other countries to convert to their beliefs. so i wouldnt go asfare as to say that the "mongers" were muslims.

I see, and look at, the Necromong ers as the natives of this hemisphere must have seen the Europeans when they came to the "New World". Superior weapons, a religious system drastically different from that which they and their people had known for thousands of generations. Just as it was then, it was in "Chronicles", "Convert or die."
I would imagine that will be factual when mere humanity makes first contact with Extraterrestrial Intelligences.

i like riddick. good movies. what i dont like is when a dum f**k american uses a perfectly good film as an excuse to make racist remarks. i cant c a guy who comes from a country that invades otheres purely 4 oil can reali make any racist remarks. do u? u were more use 2 the world when u were jus a province of a decent nations empire. my best friends a Muslim, and while its tru dat there r hardliners amoung them, there r exactly the same in any religion. our own crusades, that began this conflict between christian and Muslim, spring to mind. only a yank cud make such a dumb comment

The Necromonges are an impressive religion, almost satanic but not quite, desidedly dark though which deffinitely draws my attention. I wouldn't really go so far as to say muslim however, possibly aspects of communism but I hadn't really looked that much into the religious qualities. However as much as I adore Riddick for it's darker images and ideas (yes I am a bit gothic) and am pleased to see someone disscussing the bad side for once, I am not impressed with "shin". Dude that is just plain rude and uncalled for. None of this blog is racist, it is all a matter of opinion. In fact the onlyone being rasict is you, calling him a yank. And don't try to justify your argument with the same old "invasion for oil" routine. It's a highly noted conclusion that everyone jumps to but has little evidence to back it up. It's much more political than you could possibly fathom. Besides, anyone who argues a debate in shortened text talk deserves little ackowledgement. Quit wasting your breath. Interesting point about the necromongers though, quite intriquing.

Are you kidding? Of course this blog is racist, implying that the Muslim religion in totality is like the necromonger death cult.

Furthermore, your allegory is the reverse, and they are so obvious in this film, you'd have to have watched with your eyes closed to miss them.

The inhabitants of Helion Prime are Muslims for heaven's sake, and Helion Prime is an Islamic democracy. Helion Prime is also a energy producing system. Moreover when the Necromonger ships land, the entire sky is reminiscent of the bombing of Iraq, tracer fire lighting up the night sky and all.

Moreover, the Necromongers are a death cult, as in the Christian crusader death cult that has been identified with dominionists for a long time. Even the costumes are reminiscent of the middle ages. Moreover, Necromongers are reminiscent of the undead Christian armies from Roger Zelazney's Lord of Light.

"I found these blood-thirsty closed-minded homicide machines to be a perfect metaphor for our present day Muslims"..you are a fu*king retard.. a few terrorist does not represent 1,5 billion peace loving muslims from all races. get your facts strait because ignorant people like you spread misinformation when they think they know but does not../ Atheistkid

It is interesting to see the range of comments on this post...and how the double standards have taken over.

People trying to defend Muslims because the "terrorists" were not a true representative of the Muslim beliefs...seem to ignore the fact that by the same argument Crusades were no representation of Chirstian beliefs as can be found in the Bible.

It is also interesting to note that there is a great seperation within the Muslim community and the Muslim beliefs just as there is between the Christian community and Christian beliefs. In both cases there are a significant number of people who claim to be a part of a belief system...but do not understand all the beliefs of that system.

At the core of Biblical Christianity we find Christ whose primary actions were out of love for others. Contrast to the Prophet Mohammed who had used murder and trickery and justified it because it was against "infidels". Just between the two primary figures of each belief system, which do you think more closely represents the Lord Marshal?

Its a sci fi film with space ships and ghost i think every one needs a deep breath.......now what do i have to do to get eyes like that!

I found the Necromongers represent US foreign affairs:
1) They invade nations via military power (never by muslims)
2) They send their sightseeing spies and rats to detect the situation (definitely not muslims)
2) they say we are coming to free you with democracy and give you "New Middle East" (announced by Condi). (which was never claimed by immigrating muslims)
3) they lie, and say there are weapons of mass destruction. (no comment)
4) they build up Nabuko pipeline to suck out the resources of that nation (evident)
5) they leave it in ruins (duuhhh - you can look at Iraq and Afghanistan).
NB: Barack Obama said: America feels that democracy does NOT suit all nations. (clearly withdrawing from the big lie of Bush: spreading democracy)

necromongers are christians. their ships have three faced (god the son and the holy ghost). they are also militaristic like the crusaders who converted people forcefully or killed them. Remember the necromongers invaded new mecca.

also the necromongers belief is based on that life started as a mistake which is reminiscent of the original sin. Islam does have the original sin creed. they also can't procreate and are castrated reminiscent of how christians priest can't have sex a self imposed castration.

sorry: Islam does not have the original sin creed

Muslims do convert or kill morons. Look into the past and you will find that when they were attempting to conquer Europe, BEFORE THE CRUSADES, they would force conversion or death. In fact "rivers" of Christian blood flowed for non-converts at that time. Look into the Fez cap that Shriners wear and you'll find the truth. Yeah those old guys on motorbikes and begging outside Kmart's. History lesson the Crusades were in RESPONSE to Muslim aggression not the other way around!
